Frequently Asked Questions

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy also known as Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy or OMT, is a program of exercises to increase awareness, and help restore and rehabilitate the strength and co-ordination for the muscles of the face and tongue. This is important to ensure optimal functions such as breathing, chewing, swallowing and speaking. Many people have swallowing issues and low muscle tone that can lead to mouth breathing and health problems. We are here to help,

Why haven’t I heard of Myofunctional Therapy?

Although myofunctional therapy is decades old, it’s still not widely recognized by all professionals. This is simply because most dentists, hygienists, pediatricians, orthodontists, and ENTs were never trained in myofunctional therapy as part of their medical or dental education. We offer a Mentoring Program and a Resources Page for all professionals to educate them on the benefits of OMT and how to provide referrals and integrate myofunctional therapy into their practice.

How does therapy work?

Myofunctional therapy is an exercise-based re-habilitation treatment. I teach my patients exercises that help improve tongue posture, breathing, speaking, chewing and swallowing. When the tongue rests in the correct position and the lips stay closed, we quite often see problematic symptoms disappear. Braces, speech, jaw pain and sleep apnea become much easier to manage and treat.

Will my benefits cover OMT?

Following your comprehensive assessment visit, we provide you with a Dental Hygiene insurance claim form that you may submit in for dental coverage eligibility.

What age can you start myofunctional therapy?

The sooner the better.  The longer OMD’s are present, the longer it can take to learn and retain new, positive habits.  We begin seeing children ages 4, and up to all ages and have many different programs:  from our Habit Elimination Program, to Mini-Myo Wellness Program for kids ages 4-6, to our adult therapy offered in our Myofunctional Wellness Program and Enhanced Myofunctional Wellness Program.

Do you work with other specialists?

Absolutely! When we work with you, we help you identify the other people you may need on your comprehensive team. We work closely with dentists, orthodontists, speech therapists, body workers, ENT’s and other practitioners so we can address your concerns from each of our different perspectives.
